10 Tips Ace Your Next Test!

One of the largest difference makers to school performance is being organized and prepared for tests. In order to study effectively, it requires a positive attitude from the get-go. The right outlook can change what some may think of as a punishment  into an opportunity to learn. In all honesty, there is no one-size-fits-all approach to effectively studying as everyone has different abilities. What may work for you, may not work for others. However, what we do know is that you should be consistently improving your study skills to better understand what works (and what doesn’t).

One of the benefits of finding the best way to study is to avoid panic and frustration for an upcoming test. We all know that if you have properly reviewed and practiced the material, the chances of you doing well and being less stressed is higher. Becoming proficient in studying will not only make it easier to learn, but it will also help you achieve higher grades in school.

Below you will find the 10 key ways to study effectively. Follow these steps to get more out of your study sessions and ace your next test!

1. Get Organized

Make use of your agenda and phone calendar. Keeping track of upcoming due dates and tests will ensure they are not forgotten about. It definitely helps to know what you need to prepare for and when you need to be prepared by!

2. Avoid all Distractions

Being 100% present while the teacher is speaking is crucial. Make sure you are actively listening to what is being said. That means ignoring all distractions – cell phones, social media, and friends. Steer clear of sitting near friends and keeping your phone on vibrate.

3. Write Complete Notes

Writing comprehensive notes during class will aid in your processing of the information you are learning. These notes will be your greatest tool when studying for a test. If you ever miss a class, contact a friend or your teacher to make sure you have a complete set of notes.

4. Don’t Understand? Ask Questions.

Never be afraid of raising your hand and asking questions if there is something you are confused about. The chances of another classmate having the same question are pretty high and teachers are always happy to clarify any confusion you may have. If you do not feel comfortable in front of everyone, make yourself a note to ask your teacher after class.

5. Create a Plan

When you are preparing for your upcoming week, take a look at your planner/calendar to determine what needs to be done. Think about what kinds of questions may show up on upcoming tests and important topics/chapters so you know what to focus on and set your intentions for every study session. For example, tell yourself that you will cover four chapters by the end of your study session.

6. Review, Review, Review!

At the end of each day, be sure to review your class notes. Reviewing material helps your brain move the content you learned from short-term memory into long-term memory. This is even more so beneficial when it comes to chapter tests, unit tests, and final exams.

7. Communicate with Your Teachers

Your teachers are there to help you succeed. Talk to them when you are struggling or are in need of extra help. Taking the initiative to ask for help can make a big difference!

8. Find the Right Study Spot

Everyone studies best in different environments. Some may prefer a quiet area while some may work better with a bit of noise. Find what works best for you and ensure there is a clear workspace to read and write on.

9. Give Yourself Breaks

While you are studying, make sure you are giving yourself adequate time to process the information. For every 30-45 minutes of studying, take a 10-15-minute break to allow the learning to sink in.

10. Condense Your Notes

Shorten your notes to include only the most important information. Underline or highlight key words. Make charts, webs, study guides and mind maps to organize and simplify information to help you remember better.

Learning how to study effectively is a skill that will benefit you for life. Mastering this will require plenty of time and patience; however, if you follow these tips you will be much closer to discovering what studying techniques work best for you. Get ready to ace that next test!
